NEF113: It’s like time skipped a month and brought us back to speed on a spaceship. Dockta Valkus kicks a high interstellar breakline on this album’s worth of sci-fi infused underground minimal hip hop. Outerspace lyrics flow from the lips of Mighty Mega, who laces the album throughout with thick insight, while Dockta Valkus’ beats hypnotize for roughly an hour.
I’d say don’t sleep, but this is the stuff you’d actually hear if you happened to pass out at a drive-in theater while watching a double feature of ‘Cosmic Man’ and ‘Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers’. Please download it, it’s so sick.

Dockta Valkus’ Sci-Fi hip-hop Skybase is what I call a mood setter. It is the perfect album to play if you’re want background music to read science fiction by. I just happened to be reading The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin and the combination of spacey drones and exotic beats created just the right environment. Even on its own this is a fascinating mixture of sampling and hip-hop rhythms. I especially like the gospel / industrial hybrid titled “Hop Hop”. “Chill Out” and the opening “Ramazan” are nice examples of Dokta Valkus’ creative mix of space sounds and global samples. This is another nice album of music that you will not discover through from the commercial outlets and another answer to the tired assumption that free music isn’t good music.

Dockta Valkus provides this months quota of free hip-hop
This spacey Canadian has been on my ‘phones for the past week or so. His free (as in beer) album ‘Skybase’ deserves a listen, especially for those of you who appreciate stuff like Deltron 3030 and DJ Krush. It’s very sci-fi. It’s very underground hip-hop. It’s very good. I might as well just quote from label Neferiu Records website:

Couldn’t have put it better myself. I may even send ‘em some cash. The album can be downloaded from the labels release page.

This is fresh off the presses from producer Dockta Valkus. He comes from the same production team as Metawon (who’s a couple posts down), and dude is nice. Just some brief testimonials if you were looking to find out who he is:
“This stuff is dope. It’s like the lovechild between early ninjatune and kool keith’s inner demons.”
“Some shit reminds me of old Mark B or DJ Krush … even Vadim in spots.”
I’d post a tracklisting, but there’s 29 tracks. So get it (direct link) while it’s being offered from the label for free. Hope you like it,
