On Thursday July 30 2009, Courtenay, BC will hold it’s first ever Hip-Hop For Hunger at the Avalanche (275 8th Street). Produced by Courtenay’s Gemini Minds and Edmonton-based urban music label Music For Mavericks, Hip-Hop For Hunger is an urban music initiative that will raise both awareness and food for Courtenay’s local food bank through a hip-hop showcase that encourages patrons to donate food to gain admission.
In its seven years in Edmonton Hip-Hop For Hunger has raised 6,032 lbs of food for Edmonton’s Food Bank. Past Hip-Hop For Hunger performers include 3X Juno Award Winner Moka Only, and 2009 Juno Nominees Kreesha Turner & Souljah Fyah.
This summer, Music For Mavericks will bring Hip-Hop For Hunger to the national stage in their first ever Hip-Hop For Hunger Tour. For the 2009 Hip-Hop For Hunger Tour, Music For Mavericks has teamed up with promoters in 7 cities throughout Western Canada – each city has its own respective goal of 1,000 lbs of food. These municipal goals will help contribute to the regional goal of 7,000 lbs of food.
Earlier in the day an all ages version of Hip-Hop For Hunger will be held in Simms Milleniium Park. The show will feature performances by 2X Western Canadian Music Award Nominee Arlo Maverick (of Edmonton’s Politic Live), Neferiu Records‘ own Mantrakid and others.
Once again, to check out the all ages show in Courtenay, head down to Simms Park on July 30th at 1:00pm. For the drinking crowd, the whole lineup will be performing at the Avalanche in Courtenay at 9:00pm that same evening.
