Early in the year 2000, within the drab fluorescent lit basement lunch room of a suburban gas station, the seeds of Neferiu Records were planted. Crudely amateur minimum wage-fed budgets were sketched up, artist contacts were formulated, artwork coordinated and a sprout of vision was nurtured. It would be a crime to skip over the 10 years that followed those humble beginnings, but in a way, the best way to celebrate them is to realize just how far we’ve actually come. Neferiu Records began 10 years ago as a miniature little record label coming out of Calgary, AB, presenting the sonic splendor of a worldwide base of musicians to fans of Electronic and Hip Hop music.
As Neferiu grew, the hometown roots began to spread and a solid Canadian artist base was developed, with talent coming from Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and beyond. Neferiu Records constantly strives to balance right on the peak of experimental electronics and underground hip hop. Sometimes the pendulum sways into familiar sonic territory, catching fresh hip hop grooves laced with conscious lyricism, but there is always the inevitable swing into the styles of music that have yet to be pigeon-holed, with a roster willing to feed minds with an underground sensibility that can only be described as: Next Shit.
This July, Neferiu Records is celebrating 10 years of existence; 30+ full album and EP releases; a roster that is over 20 artists strong; and a sound palate so extensive and diverse you could literally soundtrack your everyday with it. Combining forces with one of the freshest young music and film festivals in Canada, the Sled Island Festival, Neferiu Records artists from across Canada & the United States are joining forces at the Palomino in Downtown Calgary to offer a full evening label showcase of our sick style.
The show is FREE for Sled Island Festival Pass holders, or $10 without a festival pass. And every guest of the event will receive a free copy of the brand new 10th Anniversary Neferiu Records compilation release, entitled “Tendown“. The compilation offers 20 exclusive tracks from the label’s roster, combined & designed to paint you a carefully calculated picture of what Neferiu Records is all about.
