The Dirty Sample – The Belvedere Sessions (Neferiu)
By: Thomas Quinlan
Listening to these lo-fi productions of bargain basement jazz and soul, it’s no wonder Calgary emcee Planit opted for the Dirty Sample moniker for his production alter ego. It’s dirty, gritty and catchy, with ass-kicking drums. Plus, he loves a soulful vocal loop running throughout a song, even under the emcee. For The Belvedere Sessions, a free download release courtesy of hometown label Neferiu, Dirty Sample has gathered a collection of some of his favourite emcees to lace a selection of his beats, adding a few interesting instrumental interludes throughout. Edmonton’s Touch may be the biggest and most impressive to make an appearance, rapping alongside Shortop on scathing battle track “Where’s Yours…” and repping some solo braggadocio on a dark and slow “Till Death Kiss Me,” but there’s plenty of Central Canadian emcees that step up and show and prove: Cam the Wizzard, always a personal favourite with his deep prairie twang and funny rap wordplay, mocks bad drivers (“Jeff Gordon”), fake British accents (“Craig David”) and commercial rappers (“Tiny Giant”); Low Budget Affiliates MaxPrime and Addvice benefit from one of the album’s best beats for Dirty Sample’s banging remix of “Fin Ta Blow”; Nolto half sings his way through a Freudian analysis of a whore on “Easy”; and King Dylan brags his way through a fun gospel beat on “My Faith.” And, of course, Planit steps to the mic a few times throughout, resulting in some of the most inspired songs on The Belvedere Sessions. For a compilation purported to be comprised of elements not lost during a computer malfunction, The Belvedere Sessions serves as a great introduction to some of Central Canada’s best underground hip hop talent and one wicked producer to top it all off.
